Animal Welfare Society Stellenbosch
  • Two 3m x 7m Wendy Houses. One to replace the old prefab which MUST be scrapped before the end of April (before the rains). It can't be repaired further and the electrical wiring is exposed. A disaster just waiting to happen. There is simply no space elsewhere to place the freezer (sadly but necessarily used to store carcasses) and the washing machines etc. The second wendy house is needed to replace the second prefab, which too, must be scrapped for the same reason as above. This prefab is currently used to house as many as 15 cats. There is no other available area to house them - meaning additional euthanasia of cats due to lack of space. The third wendy house will stock good quality second hand clothing and bric a brac which will be sold to the public. This will generate an income.
  • The completion of the outdoor extention to the top cattery - R9 000.00
  • To erect an outdoor extention for the bottom cattery - R20 000.00. Cats are social animals and need sun and fresh air for good health and growth. An outdoor extention will help to lower the stress levels and create an all round healthier cattery.
  • Blankets and towels (can be second hand). The blankets are used in the kennels for the dogs and towels are used as bedding for the cats. Both remain in short supply.
  • Good quality animal toys.
  • Grooming equipment for cats and dogs as well as leads and leashes.
  • Protective clothing for the staff (6) who work with diseased animals all day. Shoes +-R300 per pair, Trousers +-R150 each, Shirt +-R150 each, Jacket (protective) +-R200 each, Rain suites +-R120 each.
  • Equipment for the 'Inspector' to use relating to the handling of difficult (dangerous) animals. Net R140, Additional muzzles R60 each, safety gloves R60 per pair.
  • Sponsors are needed to help pay the costs of the operations. Cost involved is at approximately R150 per animal. This includes veterinary fees, anaesthetic, materials etc. When necessary, euthanasia will also take place, releasing many animals from their misery. The cost for this works out at +- R50 per animal.
  • Upgrading of existing kennels. Top priority for safety reasons. To repair or replace the roofing and facia boards to the dog kennels. Several of the kennels leak during winter creating a disastrous environment for the dogs. Repair to concrete floors, replace all existing wire meshing and frames as well as doors. To be replaced with new safer design, all galvanised. To be undertaken over a period of time. Diseases play a large role in the loss of many animals and it is proving almost impossible to sterilise and prepare kennels properly, as the viruses (parvovirus and distemper especially) and bacteria go into the cracks and holes. This too creates an enormous wastage in expenditure as animals have to be constantly treated for these illnesses, which they get from this shelter.
  • Mobile Clinic R500 000.00. There is an urgent need to be able to get into the townships. Many of the inhabitants do not have their own transport and the taxi services are reluctant to transport animals. To deal with primary care. I.e. to supply dips, basic medications, deworming, vaccinations, sterilisations etc.
  • Operating equipment for Clinic. Oxygen, dental equipment, aneasthetic machine, etc. Prices vary according to instruments purchased. Supplier most probably KYRON LABORATORIES R35 000.00. To assist the poorer communities in taking the best possible care of their animals.
  • An anaesthetic machine R18 000.00, which will assist in the animals recovering so much faster. Bear in mind that these animals are mostly returned to unsanitary conditions and need to be fully awake when reaching home.
  • Education. Besides dealing with the animals, one of our main duties is animal related education. We believe that regular contact with the community is needed. Visiting schools, with a focus on the poverty-stricken communities and inviting the community to our centre and clinic will help to promote pet care and animal rights. Funding is required to print brochures and pamphlets. Prices are subject to the material printed.
