FLORRIE WENT MISSING

On 15 March I left for four days to visit friends in Arniston/Waenhuiskrans, and left the four of them in the care of Rachel and am elderly tenant, Ann.   I phoned every day to find out whether everything was O.K at home, as was my habit when away without the animals.

On Monday the 19th of March I phoned again only to be told by Rachel that she last saw Florrie at lunch time on Sunday the 18th. And that there was a fierce South Easter storm in the afternoon which may have frightened Florrie.  I had to fulfil some obligations as guest at the dinner table that evening and left at 23.00 to come home and start looking for Florrie. One hoped that she was hiding somewhere but she was nowhere.

THE BIG DETECTIVE MYSTERY - HOW DID SHE GET OUT AND WENT MISSING:

As explained she did manage to get out when she wanted to join me at the guinea fowls on the parking lot - where the motor taxis for the Cable Car park to wait for clients.  I believe that on that fateful Sunday Afternoon with the South Easter storm, she must have heard somebody that sounded like me at the parking lot where the Guinea fowl would collect at feeding time, screeching for their grain. I believe that she was then picked up by somebody and taken away.  Most of the taxi drivers who were approached remembered that the dogs came with me to feed the Guinea Fowl, and were given posters to take home and distribute in their areas.

Please help us find Florrie!

STATEMENT - Hill's SOUTH AFRICA Print E-mail

In early April 2007 Hill's announced its decision, voluntarily and purely as a precaution, to recall Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food from the US and export markets, including South Africa.  This was in response to low levels of foreign substance possibly being present in the wheat gluten meal used in this particular food.

ONLY Hill's Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry was recalled in South Africa and NO OTHER HILL'S FOOD IS AFFECTED, whether PRESCRIPTION DIET or SCIENCE PLAN. All Hill's dog and cat foods are safe and nutritious and can be fed with confidence.

Hill's retrieved the entire batch of potentially affected product before distribution to vets, so no potentially contaminated Prescription Diet m/d feline dry food was ever available for sale in South Africa.

Now, in light of the recent announcement by other brands and continuing media coverage, we would like to reiterate the following facts about Hill's foods:

  • All Hill's foods sold in South Africa, both Prescription Diet and Science Plan, are safe and can be fed with confidence to dogs and cats.
  • No potentially contaminated Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food was ever sold in South Africa.  It was recalled before leaving the warehouse.
  • No cats have been reported as suffering after eating Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food.  And no other Hill's food contains wheat gluten meal (the potentially contaminated ingredient).
  • Hill's precautionary withdrawal has nothing to do with to the Vet's Choice / Royal Canin recall or with the ethylene glycol-contaminated food produced by Malmesbury-based Aquanutro, which was marketed by Woolworths.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss this further with us please do not hesitate to contact Hill's on 0800 22 87 83.

Hills Recalls Prescription Diet m/d Feline Print E-mail

At least one imported cat food product has been recalled in South Africa by its manufacturer after a scandal that saw hundreds of cats die from contaminated food in the United States.

Hills Pet Nutrition warned pet owners not to use its Prescription Diet m/d Feline dry food, which the company said must be returned for replacement or a refund.

Over the past two weeks it was reported in the international media that hundreds of cats in the US died from renal failure after eating contaminated food.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sent the pet food industry and pet owners into a panic when it revealed that melamine and melamine byproducts had been detected in wheat gluten received by Menu Foods from a Chinese company that makes dry cat food. Melamine is used as a fertiliser in Asia.

"Consumers who have any bags of Prescription Diet m/d Feline should discontinue use and speak to their veterinarian if their pet shows any signs of kidney/renal illness," the FDA warned.

Signs include loss of appetite, lethargy and vomiting.

Cases of kidney failure among cats climbed by 30 percent over the three months that the contaminated pet food was sold, which led to the mass recall.

The scale of the problem in South Africa is not known. The South African Veterinary Association's Gerhard Steenkamp said the association had not received any adverse reports from members.
