Animal Ambulance 24HR ER

The Animal Ambulance is a 24hr emergency shelter for sick and abused animals.

The Animal Ambulance was established in 2002. We are a registered non profit organisation and exist entirely on donations from individuals and fundraising events. We receive no funding from the government.

The purpose of The Animal Ambulance is to aid abused and sick animals who without our help would die an often painful death. We believe in giving all animals a second chance as we are a pro life shelter.

After the animal is rehabilitated we offer them up for adoption in exchange for a fee. All our dogs are sterilized except the puppies.

At the shelter, the animals are treated as family and are not kept outdoors, in a cage or a kennel. They are not watchdogs – they are pets.

The Society for Animals in Distress

For the purposes of this website, it is important to note that we are not a ‘homing’ organisation. From time to time, we need excellent homes for some wonderful strays, but by and large we could be summed up as Vets for Disadvantaged Pets. We work exclusively in townships and informal settlements north and north-east of Johannesburg.

We believe wholeheartedly in the benefit of child and adult education, and are currently teaching in 63 underprivileged learning centres. Our adult education, training and skills’ development is ongoing in an attempt to uplift local communities and promote responsible animal ownership.

We have eight teams of Fieldworkers in vans equipped with medicine boxes and two-way radios. We also have a static welfare point in the Winnie Mandela informal settlement where our mobile clinic staff vaccinate, deworm, dip and promote the benefits of sterilisation. Here we also hand out food and pet accessories.

We are a dedicated, proactive and progressive organisation, and we consider our beautiful farm, The Paddocks, in Vorna Valley, to be a place of Hope. We have a fully-fledged small-animal hospital that can accommodate up to 70 dogs, cats and other small animals. Our paddocks and stables accommodate up to 40 horses, donkeys and other large animals, and our veterinary surgeons are proficient in the care of equine. We currently care for approximately 300 working equine in local coal-yards. This encompasses hoof care, deworming and vaccination against Horse Flu and African Horse Sickness. Sick or injured animals are brought to our farm for professional veterinary evaluation and treatment or surgery.

Wet Nose

The WET NOSE Animal Rescue Centre Mission is to…

The Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre is a registered ‘right to life’ animal sanctuary that is involved in the rehabilitation and re-homing of abused, unwanted and neglected animals.

Our Vision is…

  • to rehabilitate and re-home abandoned neglected and unwanted animals;
  • to support owners in distress and offer a personal service to owners and animals alike;
  • to educate the public, especially children and to eradicate ignorance about animals;
  • to facilitate the adoption of animals into caring homes;
  • to ensure that every animal has a caring and loving home;
  • to actively promote sterilisation programmes as an animal population control measure; and
  • to have every animal identifiable by a tag and as an alternative a microchip.

Adoption Process

All animals are adopted from Wet Nose. Prospective foster animal owners are carefully screened before allowing an adoption to take place. We inspect the property where the animal is to be homed to ensure that it is adequate for the specific breed. The animals are never sold, they remain the property of Wet Nose after adoption and may not be sold or given to another person without the prior consent and approval of Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre. Should the person adopting the animals be unable to keep the animal anymore, the animal has to be given back to Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre with all the proper documentation.

All dogs adopted from Wet Nose receive vouchers that entitle you to some free training sessions at selected dog schools – and we urge you to take advantage of this. The classes are great fun for both owner and dogs and even older dogs can benefit from them – no dog is too old to learn. Also please read our “Guidelines on owning a dog” available with every adoption as well as on the Wet Nose website. And if you do have behavioural problems you have the option of a free telephonic consultation with an animal behaviourist whose suggestions really work provided they are followed.

Our Adoption Fees are:
Dogs and Puppies: R480.00
Cats and Kittens: R420.00

The adoption fee includes innoculations, deworming, sterilisation and micro chipping on certain breeds.
