September – National Hill’s Pet Dental Health Month – time to brush up on your pets’ oral health care

Bad ‘doggy breath’ is no laughing matter!

September is National Hill’s Pet Dental Health Month when owners are reminded that ‘doggy breath’ is no laughing matter and could indicate poor dental hygiene and a serious oral disease that may ultimately affect the health of your pet.

Oral disease is the number one health problem vets diagnose in adult dogs and cats. It causes smelly breath, discoloured teeth, bleeding gums and potentially tooth loss, and the bacteria accumulation can damage your pet’s heart, liver and kidneys. Yet according to Dr Guy Fyvie, veterinary adviser to Hill’s Pet Nutrition, severe oral disease is easily preventable.  For many owners, by the time they become aware of the problem it has advanced to affect not only the teeth, but the gums and jaw as well.

“Prevention is better than cure, from both a health and financial perspective,’ says Fyvie. “Oral disease, which can be prevented by a simple pet dental routine, is painful, potentially life-threatening and can be extremely costly if major veterinary treatment is required.  Good dental care for cats and dogs is just as important as it is for people and good oral health can result in longer, healthier lives for our pets.”

Puppy Mills in SA

puppy_mills

“How much is that doggy in the window?’ Ever wondered where that cute little puppy in the pet shop window comes from? The sad reality is that it could very well come from one of the many disgusting puppy mills throughout the country.

On Tuesday 10 February Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre’s Inspector Wynand le Roux accompanied a team from Jacaranda 94.2fm  to one of these alleged puppy mills in Haakdoringboom, Pretoria North, with the aim of exposing this shameful practice and to allow the media to see first hand just what goes on  behind the scenes. What they came across will not easily be forgotten by the team or anyone else who has seen the photos and the video footage taken and is now available on the Jacaranda 94.2fm Blog website!

Rotten chicken carcasses littered the plot, feathers were all over the place, cow’s udders were lying around to be eaten and the stench was unbearable. Flies were feasting on dogs ears causing big open wounds while a three- legged pot in the middle of the room where the puppies are born was crawling with maggots!! Dogs were being housed in dilapidated shacks all over the plot and they had to fight their way through long grass to find some of the dogs which were being housed in camps that were completely hidden amongst the mess and the bush!

CLAW

We are pleased to announce that the Community Led Animal Welfare (CLAW) situated in the Gauteng province has joined our little family.

We hope to be able to assist them as much as they have assisted the animals in their area.

11 Year Old Representing S.A.

Eleven year old Tiger, a once ‘mangy mongrel’ adopted from Animal Welfare, will be donning the green and gold and representing South Africa at the World Agility Championships in Belgium in May 2008.

Unlike the five other dogs on the team, Tiger is almost geriatric, and he’s far from a pedigree; he’s been described as a cross between a long-haired Chihuahua and a Toy Pom with a bit of Corgi thrown in. He is a ‘toy’ type dog and the only non-working dog on the team.

Six years ago Tiger’s owner Ansie Minnaar was doing agility training with her Border Collie, when Tiger suddenly joined in – he raced through a tunnel and demanded his treat. Ansie was stunned “it had never occurred to me that Tiger could do agility,” she says. “I lowered one of the jumps to Tiger’s height and gave him the over command, he was over it in flash.” Ansie says that Tiger took to agility ‘like a natural’ and she has been training him ever since.

Dog-abuse letter a fraud – SPCA

Johannesburg – The National Council of the SPCA (NCSPCA) distanced itself on Monday from a letter allegedly used to remove a dog from its owner’s property.

The NCSCPA said the letter was fraudulent, scurrilous and neither coming from, nor associated with, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Christine Kuch of the NCSPCA said the document was headed “SPCA” and hand delivered to an address in the Western Cape.

Its contents read: “It is illegal to keep an animal unattended on a property… a fine of R200 000.00 to R300 000.00 or a 12-month jail sentence. The animal has been removed after close inspection of the property.”

It was signed with an illegible signature, beneath which was written “Field Inspector, W-Cape”.

Practices make Purrfect

Ninth Avenue Veterinary Clinic in Port Elizabeth has been chosen as the most Cat Friendly Practice in Southern Africa.

Visiting the vet can be a very stressful experience for cats and their owners. But recently there has been a move by vets here and overseas to become more ‘feline friendly’. The first Cat Friendly Practice competition in South Africa and Namibia was organised in response to this trend; to raise awareness amongst vets and owners of what it means to be cat friendly, give guidance on how to become more cat friendly, and identify and reward practices that are making a particular effort for their feline patients.

Dr Guy Fyvie, one of the judges and veterinary advisor to Hill’s Pet Nutrition said, “We looked for veterinary practices that work at making visits as stress-free as possible for their feline patients, because stress is not only upsetting for the cat and owner, it can also have a negative impact on diagnosis, treatment and recovery.”

The Finalists – 2007 Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year

The 2007 Hill’s Pet Slimmer of the Year Competition finalists were announced today (29 October), revealing some seriously weighty competition for the annual title. The top 50 contenders have lost more than 300 kgs between them, and the eight finalists have lost a combined 50.95kgs. Several have lost more than half their bodyweight.

Over a thousand cats and dogs in South Africa and Namibia registered for the Hill’s Pet Slimmer programme this year; those that reached their goal weight by end August were eligible to enter the competition. The Hill’s Pet Slimmer programme combines regular weigh-ins and professional advice with a specially prescribed therapeutic diet (Hill’s Prescription Diet r/d) that helps the animal lose weight humanely and healthily; it contains a fibre that helps make the pet feel fuller for longer, thus preventing hunger pangs.

According to South African vets, about half the animals they treat weigh more than is healthy.  Yet research by Hill’s suggests that less than 20% of owners believe their pets to be overweight. “Many owners show their pets how much they love them with food and treats,” said Dr Guy Fyvie, veterinary advisor for Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “But excess weight causes major health problems, including arthritis, diabetes, cancer and heart disease. It can also negatively affect the outcome of surgery.”
